Project Overview

Affordable mixed-use at the transit edge

Van Sinderen Plaza is a 130-unit, 155,000 SF affordable housing development at 679 Van Sinderen Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn. The project sits directly adjacent to the elevated L train line — a constraint that defined the design, the construction logistics, and ultimately the building's character. The orange-and-gray paneled facade reads as a confident contemporary intervention against the rail-line context, with ground-floor retail activating the street.

Designed by GLUCK+, the development integrates retail, community space, and residential units in a transit-oriented configuration that aligns with the neighborhood's long-term planning goals. Construction required close coordination with the MTA, careful staging, and a logistics plan that respected both the operational rail line and the residents of the surrounding blocks.
